Skycans

Skycans are space habitats constructed from asteroids, sent via the Interplanetary Transport Network to the Lunar Lagrange points.

Many of them are owned by cities on Earth and are known as “High [Name of City]”. The first was High Singapore, followed closely by High Hong Kong, High New York and High Mumbai.

Because of the cheap economics of space-based industry after the building of the Space Elevators, a small skycan costs only about $100,000,000 USD, well within the reach of many individuals as well as cities and nations.

The leading Lagrange point has many resort cans, both privately owned and commercial, as well as many of the wealthier city cans (populated usually by former citizens of the city or nation which owns the can, who emigrated via the Space Elevators). The trailing point has a more industrial and downmarket feel, and the poorer cities and nations and heavy industry tend to end up there.

Cans can be residential, industrial, agricultural, resort, or a mixture.

Some resort cans are aquatic, with the inner surface covered with water apart from reefs and islands. There are also food-producing aquatic cans, some of which are entirely water-filled.
