Biddy and Mays
Biddy and May’s is the common name for the Reunified Catholic Church, Celtic Rite of the Exemplary Saints Brigid of Ireland and Mary of Bethany, a church based on Cityside as it might be in about 20 years’ time. Like Cityside, it is located in Mt Eden and draws together a diverse group of mostly creative Christians who are somewhat flexible in their approach to their faith.
Because of the advance of telepresence technology, property prices in Auckland have collapsed (since the middle class is moving to rural lifestyle cybervillages). This, and poor construction methods used around the turn of the 21st century, have enabled Biddy and May’s to buy up a large tract of abandoned and decaying apartments, knock them down and build a campus which includes St Thomas’s Cathedral, an outdoor theatre, the Upper Room restaurant and extensive facilities for various kinds of creative work. The construction was funded by successful creative projects starting with Return of the Bride of the Son of the Movie, a cult film. Falling prices have also enabled both individuals and the community to buy up houses, shops and apartments in the immediate vicinity, which is becoming known informally as the Biddy and May’s District. In addition, it has taken over a couple of local schools and now runs them as the Biddy and May’s Bangor.
The community is loosely coordinated by the Council of Twelve, headed by the three Coordinators (Community Pragmatics, Works of Skill and World Awareness).
