City of Masks is a novel set in a parallel world. It’s a non-magical fantasy (like Gormenghast), and takes place in a late-medieval/early-renaissance city, Bonvidaeo, where the masking conventions of carnival apply all year round.

A mad king of Bonvidaeo has decreed perpetual carnival, and several centuries later the customs, laws and religion of the city-state all assume that “the mask is the reality”. Into this corrupt and psychotic setting comes the disruptive force of the Holy Fool, in the person of Gregorius Bass, Envoy of Calaria. Masked as the Innocent Man, and in the company of his radical young Bonvidaoan servant - who sees not just the man beneath the mask but the skull beneath the skin - Bass stumbles into mystery, intrigue and heresy.

Plot summary - contains spoilers.

Thoughts towards a Storygame based in Bonvidaeo.
